The Indian Music And Its Revolution

Music in India, has flourished since time immemorial. It has and will always be a part of our living, our culture and our traditions. During ancient times it existed as a part of religion i.e. in Bhajans etc. The music history of India can be divided into three periods- ancient, medieval and modern.
In the ancient time, Vedic literature says that, the sages would sing while their wives used to play the instruments. The medieval period saw the establishment of the Mughal Empire. One can rightly say that they contributed greatly to music. Then came the dawn of the British rule. The Mughals were overthrown and along with them many poets and singers. Soon the musicians had nowhere to showcase their talent and were confined within their families. It became an entertainment and was looked down upon in society.
But Indian classical music was revived in the 20th century. Pt. Bishnu Digambar Paluskar and Pt. Vishnu Narayan had a major role to play in this revival. From then on, Indian Music has revolutionized significantly. It was once synonymous only to classical or Hindustani music. But now there has been a touch of westernization to it. How has this happened? Is it only because of the British rule? No, I think our singers of today are responsible for this or you could say must take credit for it (to each one his own). They are the ones that make music what it is today. They are the ones who set the trend. The singers have been molding and making their abilities to suit not only their own likes but also that of their fans. There are various genres of music in India as well as in the west. In India there's Playback also Bollywood, Sufi, Ghazal, Folk etc and also Western Jazz, Rock, Pop, Latin American etc. But the people asked for more, for better for something different. So, the singers began creatively playing around with these forms and giving us something new each day. The list of these genres is constantly growing now. They have combined a little of the western styles along with Indian classical. Indian singers the like of Lata Mangeshkar, A.R. Rehman have consistently been the best and given us the best.
Indian music was once only classical and Hindustani but now has not only offered us music lovers more, but has also created a whole new genre- Bollywood. Who has done this for us? Who has created this for us? It is none other than are much loved Indian Singers who are today on par with the biggies of Bollywood in terms of fame, name and everything else.
